Department of Transportation Specifications

NOV 2014

Iowa DOT

Iowa DOT does not follow AASHTO M 288 for their geotextile specification. The current specifications for "Subsurface Drainage" and "Embankment Erosion Control" are very problematic. For some reason, they have required a range for permittivity that excludes any nonwoven geotextile. At the same time, they have required a minimum elongation of 20% which eliminates almost all woven geotextiles except for a few. Those few would not meet the permittivity range. As written, we believe there is not a product to meet these specs. We are going to consider the INTENT of the specification and offer what we believe the specifiers truly wanted which are nonwoven fabrics. The specification for "Concrete Stone, Revetment & Bridge Abutment Backfill Fabric" is very narrow.
