Vapor Retarders & Barriers

High-Performance Vapor Retarders for Concrete Slab & Foundation Protection

Moisture vapor transmission through concrete slabs is one of the leading causes of flooring failure, adhesive breakdown, mold growth, and indoor air quality concerns. A properly specified vapor retarder system beneath slabs-on-grade significantly reduces these risks and protects long-term building performance.

GeoVapor® vapor retarders are engineered to deliver dependable moisture control while maintaining superior puncture resistance, tensile strength, and seam integrity in demanding construction environments.

Why Vapor Retarders Matter

Concrete is inherently porous. Without an effective underslab vapor retarder, moisture from the subgrade can migrate upward through capillary action and vapor diffusion. This can lead to:

  • Flooring delamination

  • Wood floor cupping and warping

  • Blistering of epoxy or resinous coatings

  • Mold amplification beneath finished flooring

  • Corrosion of embedded metals

  • Elevated interior humidity

Installing a high-performance polyethylene vapor barrier directly beneath the slab reduces vapor transmission and protects interior finishes and building materials.

ASTM E1745 Compliance – Class A, B & C

GeoVapor high-performance vapor retarders meet or exceed the requirements of ASTM E1745, the industry standard for plastic vapor retarders in contact with soil or granular fill under concrete slabs.

ASTM E1745 classifies products based on:

  • Water vapor permeance

  • Tensile strength

  • Puncture resistance

Selecting the appropriate class depends on project risk level, construction traffic exposure, and building occupancy type.

GeoVapor Product Options

GeoVapor 6, 10 & 15 Mil

The GeoVapor Series offers multiple thicknesses to accommodate varying project requirements:

  • Multi-layer polyethylene construction

  • Excellent puncture resistance

  • High tensile strength

  • Low water vapor permeance

  • Reliable seam performance

Available roll sizes:

  • 10 mil: 15’ x 200’

  • 15 mil: 12’ x 200’

Ideal for:

  • Residential slab-on-grade construction

  • Light commercial buildings

  • Warehouses and retail

  • Institutional projects

GeoVapor G 15 Mil (Green Core)

GeoVapor G incorporates post-consumer recycled content within its co-extruded core layer while maintaining high-performance moisture protection.

Benefits include:

  • Sustainable construction contribution

  • Strong tear and puncture resistance

  • Compliance with ASTM E1745 performance requirements

  • Suitable for projects pursuing environmental certifications

Complete Moisture Control System

Barrier performance depends not only on membrane quality but also on proper detailing. We offer a complete accessory system to ensure vapor continuity:

  • VaporBond Tape – High-performance seaming tape

  • Butyl Seal Tape – Double-sided perimeter sealing tape

  • VaporBoot Kit – Preformed pipe penetration sealing system

  • POUR-N-SEAL multi-pipe penetration epoxy – Provides a permanent, watertight seal around clustered penetrations

A fully integrated system minimizes installation errors and reduces long-term moisture liability.

Installation Best Practices

For optimal performance:

  1. Prepare a smooth, compacted subgrade free of sharp objects.

  2. Install vapor retarder directly beneath the slab (no sand layer above barrier unless specified).

  3. Overlap seams per manufacturer recommendations and seal continuously.

  4. Seal all penetrations, grade beams, and perimeter terminations.

  5. Protect membrane during reinforcement placement and concrete pour.

Improper installation—particularly at penetrations and seams—is the most common source of failure.

Applications

  • Slabs-on-grade

  • Post-tension slabs

  • Basement floors

  • Crawl spaces

  • Foundation systems

  • Retail and commercial flooring systems

  • Healthcare and educational facilities

Economic Impact of Proper Vapor Control

Moisture-related flooring failures can result in costly remediation, project delays, and legal exposure. Installing a compliant ASTM E1745 vapor retarder is a comparatively small investment relative to the total cost of floor covering systems.

High-performance vapor barriers:

  • Protect flooring warranties

  • Reduce callbacks

  • Improve indoor air quality

  • Extend building lifecycle

Selecting the Proper Thickness

When choosing between 6, 10, or 15 mil vapor retarders, consider:

  • Jobsite traffic levels

  • Reinforcement type (rebar vs. PT cables)

  • Flooring sensitivity (wood, LVT, epoxy, polished concrete)

  • Occupancy risk

  • Engineer or architect specification

Higher mil thickness generally provides improved puncture resistance and jobsite durability, especially in commercial or high-traffic construction environments.
